Overview
In 1727 the Kingdom of Sharjah declared themselves as independent and its boundaries extended up to Khorfakkan – an ancient trading town and with a medieval period seaport. The 18th century Kingdom of Sharjah made a history by chasing out of the Ottoman rule by the Huwayla tribe from the Qawasim clan with the support of British army. The General Maritime Treaty was signed on the 8th January 1820 between Sheikh Sultan and the Royal British Army to protect the kingdom.

Until the end of 20th century, Sharjah made remarkable developments in every field that include infrastructure, industrial development, tourism and constructed the first airport in UAE in 1968. Sharjah even had an airbase during the 1930’s. It is vivid that during 90’s Sharjah was most developed Emirates among the 7 Emirates of the UAE federation. The world-famous “The Cricketers Benefit Fund Series” (CBFS) then organised the cricket tournaments in Sharjah from 1981. How-ever during last 3 decades Sharjah gave more priority for social and family development program by building skyscrapers and promoting many parks in Sharjah. Sharjah banned sale and consumption of Alcohol by the end of 20th century to give more priority for safe and secure life. Sharjah is the third largest Emirates and third populous city of UAE Federation, with an approximate population of 1.4 million as per statistics in 2015. Sharjah is the only Emirate to have access to Arabian sea and Gulf of Oman.
